Driveway cleaning and patio care without guessing the method

Driveway cleaning should begin with the surface and the problem, not with the strongest available pressure washer. Green growth, embedded dirt and loose jointing require different attention. A patio used for sitting out can need a different scope from a drive that carries vehicles every day.

Our paving approach treats organic growth with biocide, uses a controlled rinse appropriate to the material where needed, and replaces kiln-dried sand in block-paving joints after rinsing. This page focuses on what to include in a driveway or patio enquiry and how to compare the resulting quote.

Describe what you want cleaned

Give the approximate area and identify the material if you know it: block paving, slabs, natural stone, imprinted concrete, tarmac or resin-bound surfacing. Mention algae, moss, staining and areas where the joints look depleted. Photographs help distinguish a cleaning issue from a surface that needs another kind of attention.

Include steps, paths or a patio only if you want them considered in the same quote. A driveway price should not be assumed to include every hard surface around the house. A clear boundary makes the proposed work easier to understand and prevents unlike jobs being compared as if they were identical.

Why moss and algae need their own approach

Green growth on paving is more than a colour problem when the surface is wet and slippery. Treating organic growth addresses the cause rather than relying entirely on force to remove the visible layer. The treatment and any rinse should be matched to the surface.

An area beneath planting or beside overflowing gutters may stay damp after cleaning. Describe those conditions when asking for advice. Clearing leaf debris and correcting the source of repeated wetting are separate practical steps that can help the cleaned area remain easier to maintain.

Block paving: include the joints

The condition of block-paving joints matters when choosing the cleaning process. A forceful rinse can remove jointing sand along with dirt and growth. Our paving method includes brushing kiln-dried sand back into the joints where it is needed after rinsing.

Ask whether that stage is included in the scope. A clean-looking drive with depleted joints is not the same result as a job that considers the paving system. Mention loose or uneven blocks at the enquiry stage so cleaning is not mistaken for a repair of the underlying layout.

Patios and coated surfaces

Natural stone, imprinted concrete and other finished surfaces need a method appropriate to their material and any coating. An aggressive lance can affect the surface or sealant. Controlled rinsing is matched to the surface rather than assuming maximum pressure is suitable everywhere.

Tell the cleaner about any known sealant or previous treatment. Ask which marks are organic growth and which may be a different kind of staining. A quotation should describe the cleaning proposed without promising that every old mark or defect will disappear.

How much is pressure washing a driveway?

The price follows the area, surface, growth, access and the stages required. A small open drive with light growth is not equivalent to a larger area with steps, awkward edges and joints needing attention. Comparing a single average price can hide those differences.

Ask for the method and scope alongside the figure. If a controlled rinse is proposed, establish how it suits the material and whether jointing work is included. The right question is what the driveway needs, rather than how cheaply a powerful machine can pass over it.

Book paving after roof and gutter work

If the roof or gutters also need cleaning, discuss the order. Paving is best done last because debris from roofline work can land below. Planning related work together avoids cleaning the same surface again after material drops from above.

For an enquiry, send safe ground-level photographs of the drive or patio, describe the surface and mention any roofline work being considered. The softwashing page explains the low-pressure treatment approach, while the paving guide covers material-specific care in greater depth.

Questions we get asked

How much does driveway pressure washing cost?

Area, paving material, growth, access and the treatment, rinse and jointing stages affect the quote. Request an individual scope rather than relying on an average figure.

Can moss be treated without blasting the paving?

Our paving approach uses biocide on organic growth and a controlled rinse where appropriate, matched to the material.

Is re-sanding included for block paving?

Our paving method includes kiln-dried sand brushed back into joints where needed after rinsing. Discuss the condition and scope in the quote.

Should a patio be cleaned before a roof clean?

Paving is best done last, after roof and gutter work, because debris from above can land on it.

Does cleaning repair loose paving?

Cleaning and treating growth should not be confused with repairing an uneven or defective surface. Mention loose blocks or damaged areas before work is agreed.

The practical decision

Define the area, material and jointing needs before comparing prices. Plan paving after roofline work and choose a process suited to the surface.
