Pressure washing services: match the method to the surface

Pressure washing services should be chosen by the surface and the problem, not simply by machine power. A sound paved path, a coated wall and a tiled roof are different cleaning jobs. The method needs to account for the material, its condition, nearby openings, joints and where the dirty water will go.

Compare hard-surface cleaning by the method and the stages included. Our driveway and patio cleaning page explains the paving scope. We clean roofs by hand, never pressure-wash tiles, and use low-pressure softwash methods for render. A whole-house enquiry should distinguish those surfaces before a method is agreed.

Where pressure washing may be suitable

On suitable sound hard surfaces, controlled water pressure can remove accumulated dirt. Driveways, patios and paths need a material-specific assessment: block paving, stone, concrete and coated surfaces do not all respond alike. Loose jointing, previous treatments and visible damage matter as much as the name of the surface.

Walls also require care. A hard-looking wall is not automatically suitable for pressure washing; mortar, paint, coatings and openings can be vulnerable. Do not treat rendered walls like paving. Explain the wall construction and any previous treatment, and ask whether a low-pressure approach is appropriate instead.

Pressure, treatment and rinsing are different stages

A cleaner may propose treatment for organic growth followed by an appropriate rinse. Ask what each stage is intended to do and how it suits the material. Increasing pressure to chase every mark can disturb joints or affect a finish without addressing the cause of the staining.

Our paving approach treats organic growth with biocide and uses a controlled rinse appropriate to the material where needed. For block paving, kiln-dried sand is brushed back into joints where needed after rinsing. That scope is different from passing a lance over the surface without considering the joints afterwards.

Why roofs and render need a different method

Pressure washing is not our roof-cleaning method. Moss comes off by hand, followed by suitable low-pressure treatment. High-pressure water can affect tile surfaces and force water beneath overlaps. Our tile-damage guide explains those roof-specific risks; it should not be used as a price guide for cleaning a patio.

Render cleaning uses a low-pressure softwash approach matched to the render system. If you are comparing house washing services, ask for the proposed method on each surface. A quote that includes walls, paving and roofline work should not imply that the same pressure or cleaning product will be used everywhere.

What a hard-surface cleaning quote should include

Define the area, edges, steps and adjoining paths that you want considered. Mention planting, drains, doors, glazing and anything that restricts access. Establish how runoff and loosened debris will be managed rather than assuming it is acceptable to move the dirt onto a neighbouring surface.

Ask whether preparation, treatment, rinsing and any necessary jointing work are included. Cleaning does not repair loose blocks, failed mortar or damaged coatings. Photograph those concerns safely and have them distinguished from dirt before work is agreed. Previous sealants should also be discussed when selecting a method.

Compare pressure washing cost by the job

Pressure washing prices depend on area, material, condition, access and the stages included. A broad open path with light dirt is not the same scope as paving with intricate edges, depleted joints and heavy growth. Compare complete written scopes rather than treating a headline figure as a universal rate.

When choosing a pressure washing company, ask why the proposed method suits your surface and what alternatives were considered. Check which marks are expected to respond and which may remain. A useful quotation explains the work without promising a uniformly new appearance or disguising repairs as part of a wash.

Plan the sequence around other exterior work

If roof and gutter work are also being considered, plan paving afterwards so debris from above does not land on a freshly cleaned area. Explain which parts of the property need attention and ask for separate scopes where the methods differ.

For a paving enquiry, use ground-level photographs and describe the material, growth and access. Read the driveway and patio page for the cleaning scope and the softwashing page for low-pressure treatment. Those details are more useful than selecting the strongest machine before the surface has been assessed.

Questions we get asked

Can pressure washing services include roof tiles?

We never pressure-wash roof tiles. Our roof cleaning uses hand moss removal and suitable low-pressure treatment. Hard-surface cleaning needs a separate material-specific assessment.

What affects pressure washing cost?

Area, surface material, staining, access, runoff arrangements and treatment, rinsing or jointing stages affect the quote. Compare the included work rather than a machine-only price.

How long does hard-surface cleaning take?

The area, preparation, growth, access and proposed stages determine the time involved. Ask for an estimate for the complete scope, including any work needed after rinsing.

Should rendered walls be pressure washed?

Our render cleaning uses low-pressure softwashing matched to the render system. Do not assume a method proposed for paving is suitable for render or a coated wall.

Before you agree the work

Choose by material and condition, separate hard surfaces from roofs and render, and compare treatment, rinsing, joints and runoff in the written scope.
