The weeks and months after a roof clean
Most explanations of roof cleaning stop the moment the van pulls away. What happens over the following months matters just as much, particularly where a biocide treatment is doing the slow work.
This page is the honest version: what changes quickly, what changes gradually, what is normal and what is worth ringing us about.
A rough timeline
- The same day: cleared slopes look transformed immediately, the ground is clear and the gutters are running, while treated areas still show residual staining.
- Two to six weeks: treated growth dies back and begins to lighten, and rain starts carrying loose material away.
- Three to six months: weathering does the rest, colour evens out across the slope and the difference becomes obvious in photographs.
- Twelve months: time for a look at the gutters, particularly if there are conifers or overhanging trees nearby.
- Twenty-four months: the end of the written biocide guarantee period on full roof cleans, and a sensible point to review the roof.
What is normal and not a problem
- Patchy colour on a treated roof for the first few weeks while the growth dies back at different rates.
- A small amount of debris in gutters as dead material washes down.
- Tiles looking different shades where growth had been shading them for years.
- Lichen taking longer to disappear than moss and algae, because it is stubborn by nature.
- No dramatic change in the first fortnight on a treatment-only job. That is the method working as intended.
Simple aftercare that genuinely helps
Keep gutters clear, cut back overhanging branches where you can, and do not let leaf litter sit in valleys through winter. Those three things do more for the life of a clean than anything you can buy.
Resist the urge to top it up with anything from a shed. Household products either do nothing or do harm to a treated covering.

Why does my roof still look patchy after treatment?
Because biocide works over weeks rather than instantly. Growth dies at different rates and weather carries it off gradually, which is normal for the first month or two.
Do I need to do anything myself?
Keep the gutters clear and cut back overhanging branches. Beyond that, leave it alone rather than applying anything yourself.
How long before it needs doing again?
It depends on aspect, tree cover and covering type. Full cleans carry a written 24-month biocide guarantee, and many roofs go considerably longer before they need attention.
