uPVC fascias and soffits: getting the white back without scouring it
White uPVC fascia and soffit boards show every bit of grime, algae and gutter overflow staining far more obviously than the roof above them, simply because the eye reads a dirty white board as neglect even when the roof itself is fine. It is often the fascia line, not the tiles, that makes a house look tired from the street.
The finish on uPVC is a gloss or matt plastic surface, and it scratches permanently if scoured with anything abrasive. Getting it properly clean without dulling or scratching the surface is a different skill from cleaning a roof.

Where the staining actually comes from
Black streaking under the gutter line is usually overflow — water carrying grit and organic debris spilling over a blocked gutter and running down the face of the fascia. Green staining tends to come from algae that has established on a shaded, north-facing run. Both look similar from the ground but need slightly different attention.

- Working the full run rather than spot-cleaning the visible sections, so the result is even.
- Clearing the gutter itself at the same time, since a fascia will simply re-stain if the overflow problem above it is not fixed.
- Soffit vents checked and left clear rather than clogged with cleaning residue.
When staining keeps coming back
If fascia staining returns quickly after cleaning, the cause is almost always upstream — a gutter that overflows in heavy rain, a leaking joint, or a shaded run that stays damp. Cleaning the fascia without addressing that just resets the clock rather than solving anything.

Fascias are the boards along the roof edge that carry the gutters, and soffits are the boards underneath that close off the eaves. On uPVC, both pick up green algae, black streaks and dirt washed down from the roof and gutters. Soffit washing removes that build-up so the roofline looks as fresh as the rest of the house.

Can you get old uPVC white again, or does it stay grey?
Cleaning removes the grime and algae layer sitting on the surface. Some very old, heavily oxidised uPVC has genuinely faded plastic underneath, and cleaning cannot restore colour that has actually degraded — we will tell you if that is what we are looking at.
Will cleaning scratch my fascias?
Not with our method. We avoid abrasive pads and scouring on gloss uPVC specifically because scratches are permanent and make future staining stick even faster.
Is fascia cleaning usually done with gutter cleaning?
Yes, and it makes sense to combine them, since overflow from a blocked gutter is one of the main causes of fascia staining in the first place.
Why is the staining worse on one side of the house?
Shaded, north-facing runs stay damp for longer, which encourages algae. Sunnier runs dry out faster and tend to stain less even with the same amount of debris.
