K Rend cleaning without stripping the colour
K Rend and similar through-coloured and silicone renders are meant to look clean for years, but in practice many north-facing and shaded walls turn green or streaked with black within a few years of going up. The good news is that this growth sits on the surface and can be cleaned off. The bad news is that the wrong method can ruin the render while doing it.
This page explains how we clean K Rend and other modern thin-coat renders, why pressure is the problem and what to expect after the work.
Can you clean K Rend?
Yes. K Rend, monocouche and silicone renders respond well to a soft wash. A cleaning solution is applied at low pressure to kill the algae and break down the dirt, then rinsed gently. The render is treated, not scrubbed or blasted.
What you should not do is pressure wash it. These renders get their colour from the material itself, and the surface is thin. A high-pressure lance can thin that surface, leave lighter patches where the colour has been lifted and force water behind the render.
Why K Rend goes green
Silicone renders are designed to shed water, but algae still finds a foothold where walls stay damp: north and east elevations, walls beside trees and hedges, and areas below leaking gutters or overflowing downpipes. The textured finish holds onto spores, and once growth starts it spreads across the wall.
Fixing the cause helps the clean last. If a blocked gutter is soaking the wall, we will point it out, and gutters can be cleared in the same visit.
How the clean is done
- Planting, glazing and doors are protected before anything is applied.
- A soft wash solution matched to the render system is applied at low pressure.
- It is left to work on the algae and dirt rather than being forced off.
- The wall is rinsed gently, and stubborn areas are treated again where needed.
What you will see afterwards
Green algae normally lifts on the day. Black spotting and deeper staining may take longer, continuing to fade over the following weeks as the treatment keeps working and rain rinses the wall. That slow improvement is normal for render.
If the render has cracks, blown sections or failed beads, we photograph them and tell you. Cleaning does not repair render, and we will not suggest it will.
K Rend cleaning alongside other work
Many homes with modern render also have uPVC fascias, soffits and cladding that have turned grey, and a roof that is feeding moss into the gutters. All of those can be cleaned in the same visit, with the roof done first so nothing runs down a freshly cleaned wall.

Questions we get asked
Can you clean K Render?
Yes. We clean K Rend and other through-coloured and silicone renders with a low-pressure soft wash that treats the algae without stripping the colour.
Will pressure washing damage K Rend?
It can. High pressure thins the surface of through-coloured render and can leave lighter patches. That is why we use a low-pressure soft wash instead.
Do you clean monocouche render too?
Yes. Monocouche is cleaned the same way, with a soft wash and gentle rinsing rather than pressure.
Why is my K Rend turning black?
Black spotting is usually algae or mould growing where the wall stays damp. It responds to a soft wash, though it can take a few weeks to fade fully.

In short
K Rend and silicone render can be cleaned, but never with high pressure. A low-pressure soft wash treats the algae, protects the colour and keeps working for weeks after.
