What you can do yourself, and what genuinely needs a professional
Short answer: you can do plenty from the ground, and almost nothing on the roof itself. The dividing line is not skill, it is height, and the risk does not scale down with the size of the job.
Here is an honest split of what is worth doing yourself, what is borderline, and what we would never suggest a homeowner attempts.
Safe to do yourself
- Ground-level inspections with binoculars each spring and autumn.
- Clearing debris from an accessible ground-floor gutter with proper ladder footing, if you are confident and steady.
- Trimming back overhanging branches you can reach safely from the ground.
- Cleaning ground-floor uPVC fascia, cladding and window frames you can comfortably reach.
- Photographing anything that concerns you and sending it to someone who can interpret it.
Not worth the risk
Walking on a roof is the big one. Tiles are not designed to be walked on, wet moss is effectively grease, and a slip from single-storey height is still enough to cause serious injury. Roof ladders and correct load spreading exist for a reason, and hiring a ladder does not replace the training that goes with them.
Pressure washing is the second. Domestic pressure washers do genuine damage to tile surfaces and drive water under laps and into flashings, and the damage often does not show until the following winter. It is the single most common way homeowners turn a cleaning job into a repair job.
Biocide application also belongs with a professional. Product choice, dilution and containment all matter, and getting it wrong risks plants, pets and drains as well as wasting the treatment.

Questions we get asked
Can I just use a stiff brush on the moss?
From the ground on a low outbuilding, perhaps. On a house roof it means being on the roof, which is where the real risk is, and dry brushing often breaks tiles at the nibs.
What about the moss killers sold in DIY shops?
Applying anything to a roof yourself means getting to the roof, which brings you back to the access problem. Professional treatment also covers the whole roof evenly, which a domestic sprayer will not.
Is a scaffold tower enough for me to do it myself?
Erecting and using towers safely is a trained job in itself, and being at the eaves does not let you reach a ridge. We would not recommend it.
Will you tell me if I do not need the work?
